Portfoilo of Fatehpur in Rajasthan

All of these sketches of Fatehpur, in district Sikar in Rajasthan were done on the spot. Situated amidst rugged and dusty semidesert landscape, “Fatehpur” is a place of surprising architectural and artistic interest. The old ruins of palatial mansions here often create a nostalgic aura.
In this portfolio there are different typical scenes from that area.
Here we see views from a restored haveli like “Haveli La Prince” and also pictures of havelis decaying because of neglect.
Sheth Babulal Goenka was ninety-five when I drew his picture, and he seemed to personify an age and culture that is crumbling with each brick & stone there.
Camels are part of life in Fatehpur as in the most areas of Rajasthan. Many of the people living nearby maintain their livelihood by keeping goats that graze in the rough shrub land in the arid sandy stretch that surrounds Fatehpur. The ruins of the grand buildings testify the affluence that the desert town enjoyed in olden times. Conflicting pressures of modernism have crumbled down not only the architecture but also the values of the local society in such a way that very few there actually think of the preservation of heritage.
This portfolio containing eleven ready to frame reproductions and the introduction, form a rare collection for the art lover and the collector.
The CD and DVD “Haveli in sands of time” are available and is a beautiful heritage documentary movie.

Man leaves his foot prints in the sands of time through his creations in art and architecture. Many artistic works of the past, whether well cared for, or in ruins, are reminders of such creative efforts, once made, and cherished by people in the past. But many such heritage pieces are subject to neglect and misuse at present.
This small presentation is made in an effort to make more people understand the need to restore and preserve the old heritage havelis (a type of traditional Indian mansions in decorative style) of Fatehpur in Sikar district of Rajasthan in India.       -
