Rain in
Calcutta
Its raining with big drops.
Splashing on smashed up,
earth filled pavements,
on garbage dumps, on rusty tinsheds,
on the potted rose on roof top.
Water gurgles along the drain.
Overflows it bearing litter into streets.
It becomes ankle deep, knee deep.
Bus plows through the water.
Trams stop, school boys splash along.
The beggar and destitute families
pick up their ragged
bundles and move on.
Evening comes and street-lamps shine
on murky clogged up water.
